Wing Commander Pooja Thakur, who became the first lady officer to lead  the Inter-Service Guard of Honour which was inspected by US President Barack Obama at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi, has moved court after the Indian Air Force denied Permanent Commission to her.

 Thakur has termed the IAF's decision as "biased, discriminatory, arbitrary and unreasonable".

"Armed Forces Tribunal admitted the matter and has sought IAF's response within 4 weeks," reported ANI, quoting Wing CDR Pooja Thakur's Lawyer Sudhanshu Pandey.

"I am an officer first and then a woman. Be it male or female. We are just the same. We are given the same kind of training. We are equals," Pooja had said after representing the IAF commanding the Inter-Services Guard.

Thakur, who joined the Indian Air Force in 2000, belongs to the administrative branch and is currently posted at 'Disha', the publicity cell under the Directorate of Personnel Officers at the Air Force Headquarters.

Pooja Thakur had given the Guard of Honour to President Barack Obama.
Thakur termed IAF's decision as biased, discriminatory, arbitrary and unreasonable.

This move by IAF is seen in contradiction with PM Modi's call for empowering women in armed forces and Defence Minister's assertion that women will have a bigger role in such services.

As unrest and curfew continued in Kashmir for the third day in a row, the government's top ministers met security and intelligence officials today and blueprinted strategy that includes drawing the support of major opposition leaders, dispatching senior community leaders to quieten the thousands of angry young stone-throwers, and making it clear to Pakistan that its attempts to inflame the tension will be severely blocked.

Since Friday, when Burhan Wani, the 22-year-old commander of the Hizbul mujahideen was killed, protestors have been enraged, attacking security forces and setting police stations on fire.

29 people have died and over 800 are injured in the clashes.

There is enough information we have about Pakistan, role in aiding and abetting trouble in the Kashmir region," said Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office and a lawmaker from Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has issued a statement which eulogizes Wani, provoking a warning from Delhi for Islamabad to "refrain from interfering" in India's internal affairs.

Monday's meeting was attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who was rushed back from Africa where he was accompanying Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Home Minister has briefed key opposition leaders including Mayawati, Sonia Gandhi, Omar Abdullah, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sitaram Yechury to forge consensus on handling the crisis.

The army and security forces have been urged to adopt "a more judicious use of force", said a source, as they take on hostile demonstrators who crowded the streets for a third day despite a curfew in all 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley.

PM Modi is expected to review the situation in Kashmir in a cabinet committee meeting tomorrow.

The government is keen to resume the Amarnath Yatra and ensure thousands of worshippers are not inconvenienced. 

Sources say top officers are worried that stalling of the yatra

 will be seen as the government's inability to control law and order and guarantee safe passage to devotees who come from all over India for the exacting pilgrimage.

As the situation quietens, community elders will be enlisted in cooperation with the state government in an attempt to reverse the perception of a heavy-handed administration and people-unfriendly security forces.

Wani was just 15 when he joined the Hizbul Mujahideen,

 the largest terrorist group in Kashmir. He rose through the ranks quickly, leveraging a growing resentment against the security forces with a firm grip on social media, where he posted pictures of himself and other young men with weapons.

  

Thousands attended his funeral on Saturday.

Sources say the situation is improving but that the government is sending more troops to the Kashmir Valley to prevent any escalation of violence encouraged by Pakistan or militants within Kashmir.

SRINAGAR: A youth was on Sunday killed in fresh clashes between locals, protesting the gunning down of Hizbul Mujhaideen poster boy Burhan Wani , and security forces in Pulwama district, taking the death toll to 16 in the violence which also left 200 people injured.

·       An 18-year-old youth was critically injured in clashes between protestors and security forces at Newa in Pulwama this morning, a police official said.

·        Irfan Ahmad Malik was rushed to SMHS hospital here but succumbed to his injuries, he said.

      Four persons who were injured in the violent clashes yesterday succumbed to injuried   during the night, the official said.

·        Violent protests broke out in most parts of Kashmir — with the south districts of Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam being the worst hit.

·        As per consolidated information available now, more than 200 persons, including 96 security personnel , were injured in the day long clashes during which the mobs set on fire three police installations, three civil administration offices, the house of a PDP MLA, several vehicles and targeted a BJP office.

·        Meanwhile, curfew-like restrictions continued in parts of Kashmir Valley as a precautionary measure for the second day today.

·        Normal life across Valley remained paralysed due to a strike called by separatist groups to protest the killings.

·        Separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, continue to be under house arrest while Mohammad Yasin Malik is also under preventive detention.

·        Amarnath Yatra , which was suspended from Jammu on Saturday, was resumed. Wani, a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, and two others were killed on Friday when security forces retaliated after being fired upon by the trio from a house in which they were hiding.

·        Mobile internet services were suspended and and a curfew was imposed across the Valley to contain the fallout of Wani's killing.

·        Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation in J&K. Home Secretary Anil Goswami, Joint Secretary (Kashmir division) Gyanesh Kumar, Intelligence Bureau (IB) Chief Dineshwar Sharma and senior Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials were present at the meeting being held at Rajnath's residence here.

KALYAN: Mumbai-based preacher Dr Zakir Naik , who is under the scanner after two of the Dhaka terrorists claimed he was an inspiration, seemed to have been followed by four youths from here who had run away to join the Islamic State.

Areeb Majeed, one of the Protesters supporting Zakir Naik clash with police in Srinagar four who returned last year and was arrested for links with IS, is believed to have told interrogators of the National Investigation Agency that he was inspired to delve deeper into Islam after hearing the lectures of Naik.

Copies of Naik's lectures were also found in a Darbhanga library frequented by Indian Mujahideen members. The Centre and the state are studying preacher Zakir Naik's lectures and videos after Bangladesh said his sermons, which draw wide audiences on TV and online across the world, inspired two of the seven young terrorists who slaughtered 20 hostages on Friday night in a posh Dhaka cafe.

Sleuths from Darbhanga in Bihar where a module of the Indian Mujahideen was busted in 2010-11 claimed that many hard copies of Naik's lectures were found in a library that was frequented by the members of the terror module, including founder-member Yasin Bhatkal.

Like the Dhaka terrorists, the youths from Kalyan — Areeb Majeed, Fahad Shaikh and Amaan Tandel who joined IS — are from well-to-do families and were studying engineering. Only Saheem Tanki, who went with them, had failed HSC.

TOI has learnt that Majeed told the NIA he became very religious after hearing Naik, known as an expert on comparative religion. As he began trying to read more about puritanical Islam, around January 2014, he learnt about the IS and their drive to establish a caliphate in Iraq and Syria. Soon, he was bombarded on Facebook and other social media and spoke to people in Turkey, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the US, who began indoctrinating him.

In Darbhanga, a number of books, speeches, and photographs of Naik were recovered from the Dar-ul-Qitab-Sunna library near Al-Hira Public School in the Karimganj area. Yasin Bhatkal, who was arrested by NIA from Raxaul in 2012, used to frequent the library during his stay in Darbhanga, mostly during 2010-11.

 "During the visit, he confessed other IM members like Kafeel Akhtar alias Chota Kafeel and Tahseen alias Monu used to visit the library, said a security official.

"They used to provoke religious feelings for anti-national activities and indoctrinated many youth citing atrocities like Babri Masjid and the Gujarat riots. The library was stuffed with books and hard copies of Zakir's speeches," he added.

Naik had addressed a public meeting in minority-dominated Kisanganj in 2012. "There was no ban on Zakir Naik... His rallies used to witness huge footfall in Bihar," the official said.

Brain-washed, Majeed started reading about IS on social media and finally got in touch with a woman, Tahirah Bhatt, who told him how to join the banned group. Majeed contacted Shaikh, Tanki and Tandel and left for Iraq in May last year. Presently, Majeed is in jail, Tanki is said to have died fighting, and Shaikh had contacted his family a few months ago. There has been no news of Tandel.
